We are writing to let you know about key updates for Earth Engine's noncommercial offerings starting September 16, 2024. These updates are time-sensitive and may require you to change how you access Earth Engine.

Please note that Earth Engine will continue to remain free for noncommercial use.

We have provided additional details below to guide you through these changes.

What you need to know

There are two important updates to Earth Engine's noncommercial offerings:

Since 2022, we've encouraged the use of Cloud projects, which enable you to leverage other Google Cloud tools to maximize your impact. Earth Engine users with a Cloud project are able to run custom machine learning models with Vertex AI and export large datasets to BigQuery, enabling solutions for complex use cases such as palm oil cultivation prediction and flood mapping. Cloud projects also enable a number of administrative capabilities, such as automated workflows and managed access and resources, allowing users to enable these solutions more efficiently and securely.

As part of this effort, please note the following changes to Earth Engine:

What you need to do

To ensure all Earth Engine users have a consistent experience and access to the growing set of Cloud features, follow the guidelines below:

1. All Earth Engine usage must be linked to Cloud projects:
   • As of June 2024, all new Earth Engine access requires a Cloud project.
   • Starting September 16, 2024, we will be limiting quotas* for accounts without Cloud projects, and most new Earth Engine features will only be available to users of Cloud projects.
   • Starting November 13, 2024, all Earth Engine access will require a Cloud project.
   • Transition to Cloud projects: If you're not already using Cloud projects to access Earth Engine, you’ll need to follow the steps in the configuration guide by November 13, 2024 to ensure uninterrupted access to Earth Engine. We recommend starting as early as possible since you may need additional permissions from your organization’s Cloud administrator.
   • If you wish to retain your individual access (without a Cloud project) beyond November 13, 2024, please review your eligibility and apply for an extension.

We remain steadfast in our commitment to offer Earth Engine free of charge for noncommercial and research use. If you're using Earth Engine for free, please ensure that your usage is consistent with our noncommercial and research use policy. We will be reviewing noncommercial usage to ensure that it aligns with our policies.

1. Verify your noncommercial use:
   • Review the eligibility requirements for noncommercial use to verify your noncommercial use.
   • If you do not qualify for noncommercial use, register a project for paid use by following this guide.
